The Japanese biwa is a stringed instrument similar to the lute. Italian-native biwa artisan Doriano Sulis, born on the Italian island of Sardinia, majored in classic guitar at university. After marrying a Japanese woman, he moved to Fukuoka, Japan in 1974. He was apprenticed to a chikuzen-biwa artisan, from whom he learned how to make and restore biwa. Currently he is the only artisan capable of making and restoring chikuzen-biwa. Doriano Sulis took on his first apprentice in 2020 and is passing on his skills.
