The terraced rice paddies of Shiroyone are situated on a number of hilly slopes along the Japan Sea. There are 1,004 terraced rice paddies in an area of about 4 hectares. They are a well-known sightseeing spot in the northern part of the Noto Peninsula (Oku-noto area), being regarded as a traditional Japanese landscape. The terraced paddies form part of the Noto Satoyama and Sato-umi site. In 2011, it became the first site in Japan to designated under the Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems.
